Candidates will learn to appraise the statistical content of research papers, and will practise the presentation of statistical data and the application of basic statistical methods. Exercises involve computer skills, particularly the use of SPSS statistical software. |

6 | This unit aims to provide students with core skills in epidemiology, particularly the ability to critically appraise public health and clinical epidemiological research literature. Topics are: study types; measures of frequency; measures of association; use and interpretation of population health data; selection bias; confounding/effect modification; screening and test evaluation; infectious disease outbreaks; causal inference; measuring public health impact; systematic reviews. |
| SEXH5202 | Advanced HIV Infection | 6 | This unit provides an introduction to the virology, immunology, epidemiology, clinical presentations & management of HIV infection and the associated consequences of immunosuppression. |
| SEXH5207 | STI/HIV Clinical Attachment | 6 | Each candidate is attached to a sexual health & HIV clinic to observe or manage patient care under supervision for a total of 15 sessions (half days) throughout the course. Whenever possible, attachments are tailored to complement the candidates previous clinical experience. |

This unit aims to introduce the basic social, public health and medical aspects of the common sexually transmissible infections (STIs) and infection with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).Individual modules addressing the key areas will be presented, with associated reading materials and exercises. A systematic approach is used, enabling the student to understand the basic principles of how STIs and HIV impact on society, present to clinical services and how they are managed in a variety of settings. |
