About STIRC

The Sexually Transmitted Infections Research Centre (STIRC) is an internationally renowned research and teaching centre within the University of Sydney. Our teaching courses on sexually transmitted infections and HIV are taken by a wide range of doctors, other healthcare workers, laboratory scientists and public health practitioners. We foster an active research environment targeting a number of important areas, including anogenital cancers, novel diagnostic technologies and health service delivery issues.

Students come from a wide range of backgrounds and countries, helping us build a thriving and stimulating academic community.

Research

STIRC has a comprehensive and dynamic research program, covering a wide range of aspects of STIs. Areas of particular interest include:

  • the pathogenesis and immunobiology of STIs and related conditions, including their role in the development of cancer
  • greater understanding of sexual behaviour and barriers to the implementation of safer sex practices
  • vaccine development

Education and Training

We have developed very innovative and interactive face to face and online educational programs for sexual health & HIV.

Other Activities

The Unit has established a national and international standing. Members of the Unit serve on Area and State Committees, Editorial Boards of international journals (see links on right side of this page) and Advisory Panels for various international drug companies. In addition, several members of the Unit have been involved in the organisation of international conferences.

Members of the Unit are actively involved in advising or briefing health authorities and the media about specific sexual health issues.
